IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER #2
Cadgewith Farms Has Levels of Combined Radium Above Drinking Water Standards
October 11, 2024
Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.
We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Testing results we received on July 10, 2024, show that our system exceeds the standard, or maximum contaminant level (MCL), for Combined Radium. The standard for Combined Radium is at or below 5 picocuries per liter (pCi/L). The average level of Combined Radium over the last year was 7 pCi/L.
What should I do?
You do not need to use an alternative (e.g., bottled) water supply. However, if you have specific health
concerns, consult your doctor.
If you have a water softener or reverse osmosis, a NSF 44-certified water softener systems and NSF
58-certified reverse osmosis systems are best for removing virtually all radium from drinking water.
What does this mean?
This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who drink water containing radium 226 or 228 in excess of the MCL over many years may have an increased risk of getting cancer
What happened? What is being done?
We are currently working with The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy
and continuing to collect routine combined radium samples every quarter. We anticipate resolving the issue shortly and will keep you updated.
